How to get to Hatoma Island
There is no airport on Hatoma Island, so you must first go to Shin-Ishigaki Airport. Then, from Shin-Ishigaki Airport, head to Ishigaki Port Terminal (about 30 minutes) and take a ferry to Hatoma Island (about 50 minutes).

It is possible to go to Hatoma Island from Iriomote Island.
The ship departs not only from Ishigaki Island, but also from Uehara Port in Iriomote Island.
Since it takes much longer, it is better to take a direct flight from Ishigaki Island unless you also want to go sightseeing in Iriomote Island.

10 recommended sightseeing spots on Hatoma Island
(1) Beach in front of
Maehama Beach is located in the southern part of Hatoma Island, about a 3-minute walk from Hatoma Port.
This beach is surrounded by breakwaters, so it is recommended for swimming with children due to its calm waters!

(2) Birthplace of Hatoma Elementary School
Hatoma Elementary School was established in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) and had a long history, but due to depopulation and declining birthrates, it was merged with the junior high school. The current school building is located next to the beach in front of where the junior high school used to be. To commemorate the historic elementary school, a monument to the birthplace of Hatoma Elementary School was erected on the grounds of the Hatoma Island Community Center.

(iii) Ruins of Samurai House
Bushiya (Bushinuya) is a stone watchtower that monitored enemy and trading vessels sailing around the island. The stones were used for reclamation when a pier was built in the harbor in the 1960s, but were rebuilt in 2010 by island volunteers in 2010.

(4) Yara beach
Yara Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Hatoma Island with its wide sandy beach. It is crowded with tourists during the summer season. The waves are very calm, and coral and tropical fish can be found offshore, making snorkeling and swimming enjoyable!
Also, on a clear day, you can see Iriomote Island and the sunset in the evening.

(5) Funabara Beach
Funabaru-hama Beach is located on the east side of the perimeter road, and is a less major beach than Shimanakahama and Tachibaru-hama, giving it a more private feel. The shallow waters make it safe for children to enjoy swimming. The scenery is beautiful, making it a perfect place to relax!
It is also a great place for beachcombing as there is a lot of drifting debris.

(6) Annukah (down well)
Hatoma Island relied on several wells for drinking water when water supply was not widespread. Annukar is one of them. A large banyan tree grows wild near Annukar. A spring gushes from a cave under this banyan tree and has been excavated.
It is just a short walk from the Hatoma Island Marine House guesthouse, so it is a great place to stay and visit as well.

(7) Sente banyan tree
Chite Banyan is a large banyan tree located near the island's Naka beach. It takes about 40 minutes from the port on foot along the Hatoma Island circling road to reach it. On the way to Sente Banyan Tree via the roundabout road, there are several large trees, the largest of which is Sente Banyan Tree. On the other side of the road, there is also a five-brother banyan tree.

8) Married Couple Rocks
Married Couple Rocks are huge rocks located near Tachihara Beach in the northwestern part of Hatoma Island. It was named after a couple who lived on this land. Signs are posted along the way, so you can get there without getting lost. However, there are many other rocks in addition to the couple rocks, so it is better to ask the locals which rocks are the couple rocks.

(ix) Island Nakahama
Shimanaka Beach is a popular beach in the northern part of Hatoma Island. From Hatoma Port, continue north, passing Hatoma Nakamori Forest. Near the entrance of the beach is the Senju Banyan Tree mentioned above.
The sea is also home to colorful corals, making it perfect for snorkeling! You can also enjoy beachcombing as there is plenty of star sand on the beach.

(10) Five Brothers Banyan Tree
The Five Brothers Banyan Tree is located across from the Thousand-armed Banyan Tree. While the Senju Banyan Tree looks like a thousand-armed Avalokitesvara with its branches spreading out, the Five Brothers Banyan Tree has five plants arranged like brothers.
