Iriomotejima Mangrove Kayak Half Day Tour

This is a half-day experience tour of mangrove kayaking (canoeing). We will take you to the field where you can enjoy the nature of Iriomote in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, not to the famous sightseeing spots.

The main field is the Nakama River, a treasure house of living things. You will go through a tunnel in the forest that only a kayak (canoe) can go through, where sightseeing boats cannot go!

Guide to Nakama River (Nakama River)

It is a large river boasting the largest mangrove basin area in Japan, and is a popular activity spot where you can go up by pleasure boat or kayak.

The river is over 200 meters wide near its mouth, and the view of the magnificent river and mangroves from the Nakama Bridge is exceptional. Mangrove forests cover approximately 300 hectares on both banks of the river, the largest in Japan, and are designated as a national natural monument.

After a paddling lecture and instruction on how to operate the kayak, we will head for the mangrove river.

We will slowly familiarize you with the area and aim to reach tributaries with mangroves all around, but there is no set destination, so you can enjoy the experience at your own pace.

When rowing, you basically get your upper body (especially your arms) wet. If your body gets wet in warm water, you feel rather good! Let's have fun with water filling.

I was worried about joining the tour alone, but it was no problem at all. He is a wonderful instructor who respects the nature of Iriomote. His teaching style is also very attentive. I joined this kayak tour because I wanted to enjoy the nature of Iriomote Island quietly. The experience of going through the mangrove forest in a quiet and relaxing place, not a sightseeing spot, was wonderful! The tunnel-like scenery of the Nakama River was a special kayaking experience. The guide was kind and explained the flora and fauna as we went along, which deepened my understanding of nature. Looking for southern flying foxes on the mudflats was also fun, and we enjoyed relaxing and having fun as a family.

Even a kayaking beginner could enjoy this tour! The guide carefully taught us how to paddle and operate the kayak, so even though it was my first time, it went smoothly. The mangrove forest in the Nakama River around Ohara Port felt like a jungle expedition as we proceeded through a narrow river that was inaccessible by boat. It was fun and relaxing to look for creatures in the river as we went along. It was a tour that made me feel at one with nature!

The guidebooks show us on a narrow river through the mangroves, but we started from the wide lower reaches of the Nakama River until we got there. I was half anxious and half curious about kayaking, but it turned out to be a great and unforgettable experience for me. The mouth of the Nakama River is a very broad and large river. To be honest, I was thinking that I would experience kayaking only after moving to the backcountry to some extent. However, after a brief pre-trip training, we were told "Let's get going" and started from the mouth of the Nakama River! (Sweat) There were some waves and wind, so I prepared myself like a fallen warrior with no way to escape unless I paddled out into the open sea (laugh), and under the guidance of the instructor, I paddled out into the Nakama River. At first, I was not able to handle the paddle well and was impatient because I could not find the direction I wanted to go, but thanks to the instructor who gently (and patiently) guided me repeatedly, I gradually got the hang of it and began to enjoy the magnificent scenery and the ever-changing surface of the river. The climax of the trip was the hirugi (hollyhock). The climax was when we entered a large colony of hirugi (mangrove). It is a place where no one can set foot. In the dignified silence, we were startled by the occasional alarming "pan" sound made by the tephos! We proceeded through the mysterious jungle air, bumping our kayaks against the roots of the hirugi (mangrove). It was a moving experience! That is the only word I can use to describe it. I would definitely like to try this activity with my wife next time, as we can enjoy the mystery and power of nature even at this age. If you have not experienced this activity, please give it a try! My family of three joined the tour. Despite it being December, the day was miraculously sunny and the waves were calm, allowing us to experience the best scenery and the spectacular mangroves. The instructor was fun and gave us clear explanations, and we had a great time. We are planning to join the full day course including trekking next time.

I participated in this tour with my 5-year-old boy and three other parents and their children. We paddled the canoe in a relaxed manner and enjoyed the great outdoors. My child was very interested in seeing mangrove flowers and giant hermit crabs for the first time. The small group made it easy for us to relax even with children. Thank you very much.

We were able to make a reservation after 5:00 pm the day before and were accepted. First, we were taught how to paddle before getting on the kayak. Both of us were beginners, and at first we were not able to paddle in the direction we wanted, but we were taught carefully and gradually got the hang of it. It was a lot of fun to go so close to the mangroves, which is something you can only do by kayak!

We booked the day before but were accepted. There were two groups of five participants, and the guide was very attentive to beginners. The guide was very knowledgeable about the plants and creatures of Iriomote Island, and we found a small crab on a sandbar at low tide, and he told us about the different types of mangroves. It was also great that he took us to a tributary where we could only go by kayak and enjoy the spectacular view. We were also picked up from our lodgings and sent directly to the harbor on the way back with the use of a changing room, so it would be easy for those without a rental car to join the tour.
