What is the Niimori Family Residence?
An old wooden thatched house located on a hill in Sonai village. It is said to be the oldest wooden private house in Okinawa Prefecture, estimated to be over 140 years old, and is designated as a cultural asset by the prefecture. It is built in a style known as "nukija," which uses wedges instead of nails or metal fittings, and the pillars and beams are made of wood produced in Iriomote Island. In addition, table coral is used for the stone walls surrounding the site, and the large fukugi trees planted as windbreaks are also beautifully preserved.
Visitors are free to tour the houses, but the surrounding streets are narrow, so if you are driving, it is recommended that you park your car a short distance away along the seaside.
